Alexandre Sassaki

Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1957, I studied journalism in Rio de Janeiro. From 1979 to 1981 in Tokyo, I completed a photography internship at STUDIO MURAI with Osamu Murai, a reference in Japan in architectural photography.

Back in Brazil, I worked as a photojournalist for more than 35 years. As a correspondent for Brazilian news agencies, as well as the French news agencies Sipa and Gamma, I have published in various magazines such as Times, Newsweek, Paris Match, VSD, Veja -prize of the XV edition of photojournalism- among others. From 1997 to 2015, I was editor-in-chief of photography for the Brazilian daily newspaper "O Globo". Since 2016, I have been dedicating myself to large-format analogue photography as well as to the alternative processes of platinum palladium prints. Based in Arles since 2023, I am developing an architectural photographic project on stone.

In France there is an enormous diversity of landscapes of which stone is one of the determining materials. Sculpting these pebbles, the civilizations on the shores of the Mediterranean built castles, cathedrals and their homes. The Alpilles in Provence inspired Frank Gehry to create the Luma Tower.
